WANT TO GET $6000 MORE FOR YOUR HOME? THIS IS THE PAINT JOB YOU NEED!
(AND IT’S PROBABLY NOT THE ONE YOU THINK!)
One of the first things most people think of when they are preparing to sell their home, is sprucing it up to make sure it’ looking its best and one of the most common (and sensible!) questions we are asked is “What home improvements will get me the most bang for my buck?“. We cover this topic more extensively elsewhere on this blog but one of the simplest updates that will help your sale is good paint job. It’s relatively quick and cost effective and, if done well, can give any space a new lease of life.
But according to Zillow, there is one surprising paint job that could see you boosting your home’s value by a cool $6000… any guesses what it might be?
We will give you a clue… it involves your FRONT DOOR!
Yup, that’s right! Just 1/4 of a bucket of paint can make a big splash on the value of your home using this simple tip!
Ok… now the big reveal… what’s THE $6k colour? Have you placed your bets?
… Did you say BLACK?
Then gold star to you because you are CORRECT ⭐
According to Zillow’s survey, a high-contrast black front door was associated with the highest offer price! This bold look has buyers willing to pay an average $6,449 more! Proceed with caution though… despite pulling in the biggest offers, it is as Marmite as you might think with some buyers saying it is “imposing”, making it not one for the faint of heart.
For the daring amongst you though, it could just be a chance that pays off!

It’s not all bad news for our more risk adverse readers though as there is a safer alternative option to consider. The clear all-around front-runner, taking into account popularity and offer value, was a front door painted slate blue. This chalky light blue-grey color rated pulled in an average increased offer value of $1,537 and was associated with increased likelihood to buy amongst actual and prospective buyers, making it the overall top rated color for sales success!
Careful though…there is a fine line between slate blue, and charcoal gray, with the latter scoring lowest overall with poor purchase intention and low offer value!
As they say… the difference really is in the detail!

And what about the color to avoid? Sorry all you pink lovers out there but pale pink doors rated worst for offer value! Buyers were willing to pay an an average of $6,516 less than expected for homes showcasing this look, making it a potentially costly design decision. Sad face.

So what do you think? Are you surprised? Would you hop on the black front door trend? Are you a fierce defender of the pink palette?
